Lazio 0-2 Juventus: Bianconeri edge closer to Scudetto

A brace from Juventus star Arturo Vidal has moved the Turin side closer to retaining the Serie A for the second consecutive season after clinching a 0-2 win at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

The win means Juve extend their gap at the top of the table over Napoli to 11 points with only six games to play, while Lazio's chances of qualifying for a Champions League place evaporated with the loss.

Conte's men on the other hand battled supremely to overcome the disappointment of exiting the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich only a few days earlier and the three points seemed all but guranteed after only the first half an hour.

The first chance of the match though fell to Lazio's Hernanes, who drew a brilliant save from Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, after the Brazilian's shot went through a heap of legs.

Only 8 minutes had elapsed when Juve drew first blood, and it was a clumsy foul by the inexperienced Lorik Cana on Mirko Vucinic in the area, which allowed Vidal to step up and fire home to net his first goal since November.

The Montenegrin striker went close to doubling his side's lead on 20 minutes, but Italy's 2010 World Cup custodian Frederico Marchetti denied the former with a good diving save.

The Bianconeri were not to be denied for much longer though when Cana diverted a Claudio Marchisio cross into the path of Vidal, with the Chilean firing home from close range.

The away side took control of the game and were wasteful in front of goal, with Paul Pogba missing two chances before the break.

Lazio boss Vladimir Petkovic seemed to spur his players on at half time, and they responded in the second half as both Miroslav Klose and Ederson threatened Buffon's goal at the beginning of the second half.

Ederson and Libor Kozak then linked up well to allow the latter to head wide of the goal, with Buffon seemingly beaten.

Kozak fluffed another chance to get one back from the biancocelesti, but he could only direct his low cross wide of Buffon's post.

Klose was to miss his final shot in stoppage time to the frustration of the home fans and the delight of the travelling contingent, with both going home conscious of Juve's virtually unassailable lead at the top of the standings.

Lazio did knock Juventus out of the Coppa Italia. Can the Bianconeri put a dent in the Biancocelesti's European aspirations for next season?...

Welcome news for Lazio has come in the return of striker Miroslav Klose from injury during the week. The German even got several minutes against cross-town rivals Roma. But coach Vladimir Petkovic's focus is not on the domestic league, but doing well against Turkish side Fenerbahce, meaning many players could be rested on Monday night.

Juventus will be looking to bounce back after their disappointing Champions League exit to Bayern Munich, with the sole focus now being on securing the Scudetto as quickly as possible. Losing 4-0 over two legs would have hurt the pride oc coach Antonio Conte, but he is aware that his troops were ultimately overrun by a better team. Sebastian Giovinco is the only injury concern for the Bianconeri, after being on the end of a sickening tackle.

Juventus have failed to claim maximum points against Lazio in three attempts this term.

Prediction: Lazio 1-1 Juventus

Serie A Week 32 Preview: AC Milan v Napoli

The battle for second place heats up as the Azzurri travel to the San Siro...

Sunday 14 April 2013

Milan's impressive streak throughout the past month came to a halt last weekend when the side travelled to Florence. Taking a 2-0 lead over Fiorentina, the Rossoneri allowed the Viola to come back with two two goals in 10 minutes to secure a draw. What will also hurt Massimiliano Allegri's side is that star striker Mario Balotelli will miss the next three matches for abusing officials. This will give the likes of Giampaolo Pazzini and Stephan El Shaarawy more of a chance to shine, as both have taken a backward step upon the former Manchester City striker's arrival.

Napoli were able to take advantage of Milan's slip-up by claiming a 2-0 win over relegation strugglers Genoa, extending the lead in the race for second place to four points. And considering how the Partenopei attack has been playing over the past month, they have been firing on all cylinders. Goran Pandev could provide the key to the game, as his experience playing at the stadium could be the difference. Edinson Cavani will also be looking to add to his 22-goal tally.

Milan are still unbeaten in 2013 whilst playing in the Serie A.

Prediction: AC Milan 1-1 Napoli

Serie A Round 30 Preview: Inter Milan v Juventus

The Derby d'Italia is already upon us, and there is some extra spice with this clash, as both teams look to meet their campaign's objectives...

Saturday 31 March 2013

Plenty of questions have been asked of Inter this season, and many have come back to haunt the Nerazzurri over the past month. One has been whether the side could juggle the Europa League and Serie A competitions, and the Nerazzurri are seemingly doing okay. However, it has come at a cost as they have slipped down the domestic table since November. And losing 1-0 to Bologna before the international break has brought things to a head. Coach Andrea Stramaccioni says the team are fired up for this match, but can the side lift - especially defensively? Juan is out through suspension meaning Matias Silvestre will come into the starting XI.

Many of Juventus' players have been playing three games a week since the start of 2013, and fatigue is seemingly yet to kick in. With the same occurring during the international break, will the Bianconeri men be ready to beat one of their biggest rivals? Paul Pogba stole the headlines throughout the week, as the Frenchman was sent off against Spain, and Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli worked well for Italy against Brazil and Malta. Beating Bologna relatively easy, the Bianconeri want to claim their fourth win in five matches.

Hard to go by Juve at the moment, but Inter did win the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Prediction: Inter Milan 0-1 Juventus

Barcelona 3-1 Rayo Vallecano: Messi double extends Barcelona ladder lead

Lionel Messi has scored twice to help secure a 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano, further extending their lead at the top of the La Liga ladder.

Defender Adriano was pulled from the pitch 22 minutes in, it being confirmed afterwards that he had injured right leg that will see him out of action for four to six weeks.

So the task was on the strikers and Messi was in strong form early, with a free kick 25 minutes in hitting the crossbar but providing teammate David Villa the chance to put Barcelona one up.

Villa returned the favour for Messi before both sides went to the rooms for half-time, with a pass allowing for the Argentinean to score his first for the match, and in his 18th consecutive league match.

He wasn’t content with just one though, striking again shortly after the break, Messi scored his second after evading his marker and the keeper.

Desperate to take something away from the match, Paco brought on Raúl Tamudo whose first touch brought back a point for Vallecano.

Unfortunately it was too little too late for Vallecano, Barcelona securing a 3-1 victory and took Messi’s La Liga scoring tally to 42 goals this season.
