Chelsea have made an offer of €40 million for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, according to Spanish daily Marca.

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is keen to sign another striker at the end of the season in light of Fernando Torres’ poor form and the likely departure of club stalward Didier Drogba.

Real Madrid have reportedly rejected the English side’s offer as Higuain is still seen as an important player in the Spanish capital by coach Jose Mourinho.

However, the Blues are set to continue their bid to sign the Argentine when negotiations to recommence in the summer.

Higuain has not been a regular starter in Mourinho’s side this term having been forced to share the leading striker’s role with Frenchman Karim Benzema.

Nonetheless, the former River Plate star has notch a respectable tally of 14 goals in 17 La Liga appearances.

Chelsea will have to fight for Higuain’s signature with re-emerging Italian giants Juventus who have also been linked to the player.
