Javier Mascherano was ecstatic after clinching his first Champions League title as a Barcelona player, as his side cruised to a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Wembley. Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa all got on the score sheet for the victors, whilst Wayne Rooney netted the lone goal for United. Mascherano was thrilled to be apart of a Champions League winning team, which he described as the “top title” in football. “To win the Champions League for any footballer is the top title,” Mascherano explained in a post-match interview. “We are really happy because we have beaten a fantastic team in Manchester United. “We are delighted to have played the way we like to play, so it’s really good for us. We try to play by keeping possession all of the time, and trying to play most of the game in the opposite half playing well, and we did that.” The Argentine midfielder, who found himself playing at centre-back alongside Gerard Pique in the final, made a few final comments on his positional change, whilst he also paid tribute to his former supporters from Liverpool. He continued: “Playing at centre-back has been a little bit of a strange situation for me. It’s a position that is not my natural position, but I try to do my best and give my best to the team, and I am happy because we reached our target.” As for his former fans from Merseyside: “I know Liverpool supporters were maybe a little disappointed with me after my exit, but I’d like to say this victory is for them as well.” |
